PhD research assistantship is available for graduate study leading to Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Engineering Physics starting from January or September 2005.
First research project is in the area of computer modeling of short pulse laser interaction with metal targets. The goal is to gain a fundamental understanding of the fast non-equilibrium processes induced by laser irradiation of metal surfaces and to perform analysis of practical implications of the revealed physical picture for the advancement of laser technologies.
Second research project involves computational investigation of a new laser-assisted method for deposition of polymer matrix nanocomposite films and coatings with controlled dispersion of reinforcing nano-elements (such as carbon nanotubes).
The students will join the Computational Materials Group and will work on the development and application of different computational techniques (continuum, atomistic, mesoscopic) to the research problems described above. Strong background in physics, materials science, computer science or related discipline is required; experience with any computational methods is highly desirable.
Computational facilities available to members of the group include 13-node dual Opteron Beowulf cluster and Dual Alpha UP2000 21264 750 MHz computer. Additional computational recourses are available through the University of Virginia Information Technology and Communication Service. Opportunities to work with a number of research groups and present the results at national and international research conferences will be available.
